Find Dissolution of Marriage Records in Lawrence
Lawrence dissolution of marriage cases are handled through the Essex County Probate and Family Court. The city has a satellite court session at the Fenton Judicial Center on Appleton Street, which is within walking distance of most of the city. Records, however, are kept at the main Essex County court in Salem. This page explains how that split works and covers everything Lawrence residents need to search records, file new cases, or get certified copies.
Lawrence Overview
Where Lawrence Dissolution of Marriage Cases Are Filed
Lawrence has an Essex County Probate and Family Court satellite session at the Fenton Judicial Center, 2 Appleton Street. That is about 0.4 miles from City Hall, an eight-minute walk. The satellite is open Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. You can appear for hearings here, and you can file paperwork here on those days.
There is an important detail Lawrence residents need to know: all divorce records are stored at the main Essex County court in Salem, not at the Lawrence satellite. If you need certified copies of a judgment or decree, or if you want to view a full case file, you must contact or visit the Salem office. That office handles all records requests and keeps the permanent files for every Essex County dissolution of marriage case.

How to Search Lawrence Divorce Records
MassCourts is the free online search tool for Essex County Probate and Family Court records. It covers cases in the Lawrence satellite session along with all other Essex County cases. Search by name or case number at masscourts.org. Results show party names, docket events, and case status. Some family court records carry access restrictions, so not every detail is visible in an online search.
The state's general court docket search at mass.gov is another option. It links to different court systems and clarifies what each one covers. Start there if you are not certain which court session handled a specific case.
For full file access, contact the Salem records office. You can email Essexcorrespondences@jud.state.ma.us to ask about a case or request copies by mail. The Salem office handles certified copy requests and can confirm basic case details over the phone at (978) 744-1020. Have a party name and an approximate filing year ready when you call. The virtual registry at the Salem location is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, which covers requests that do not require an in-person visit.

Filing for Dissolution of Marriage in Lawrence
Lawrence residents file under M.G.L. Chapter 208. Two paths are available. A joint petition under § 1A requires both spouses to agree on all terms first. A complaint under § 1B is filed by one spouse when no agreement is reached. Each type of filing starts a different court process and creates different records.
For a joint petition, both spouses sign a separation agreement that covers all contested issues: property, debts, custody, support, and alimony. They file the agreement together with the petition. The filing fee is $215. After the court reviews the paperwork, a hearing is set. If the judge approves the agreement, a judgment nisi is entered. Under § 21, the case is final 120 days after the nisi date.
A complaint for divorce costs $280 to file. After filing, one spouse serves the other by constable or sheriff. The case then proceeds through the contested court process. A nisi enters if the judge grants the divorce, and it becomes final 90 days later. Contested cases move more slowly and involve more court dates than joint petitions.
Nisi Period: A Lawrence dissolution of marriage case is not final on the day the judge rules. Joint petition (1A) cases wait 120 days. Contested (1B) cases wait 90 days. The divorce is only absolute after that time ends.
All filing forms are free at mass.gov. Financial statements are required in most cases. Under Rule 401 of the Supplemental Probate and Family Court Rules, financial statements are impounded by default. They are not part of the public record and do not appear in standard case searches.
If your case involves children, you must file a Child Support Guidelines Worksheet and a Parenting Plan along with the other required forms. Both are available free at mass.gov.
Lawrence City Clerk: What Records They Have
The Lawrence City Clerk does not have dissolution of marriage records. Divorce is a court record, and it is kept entirely by the Probate and Family Court. The City Clerk handles vital records, which are birth, marriage, and death records. These are different from divorce records.
If you need a marriage certificate or birth record to support a dissolution of marriage case, the City Clerk can help with that. The office is at City Hall, 200 Common Street, Room 107. The City Clerk website is at cityoflawrence.com. Note the City Clerk has extended hours on Tuesdays until 7:00 PM, which is helpful if you work during the day.

Fees for Lawrence Dissolution of Marriage Records
Filing fees are set by the Massachusetts Trial Court and apply at every Probate and Family Court location, including the Lawrence satellite. The joint petition (1A) filing fee is $215. A contested complaint (1B) costs $280. Pay at the court window when you submit your papers.
Certified copies of divorce judgments and decrees cost $20 each. The court does not accept personal checks. Pay by attorney's check, money order, or bank certified or cashier's check. Make all checks payable to "Commonwealth of Massachusetts." Plain copies cost less than certified ones. Contact the Salem office at (978) 744-1020 to ask about current plain copy rates.
To request copies formally, use the PFC-18 form. Download it at mass.gov. Fill it out before contacting the Salem office. You can send it by email or mail to the Salem location. The state's official process for getting a copy of your own divorce record is described at mass.gov.
Income-based fee waivers are available. File an Affidavit of Indigency with your initial paperwork. The form is free at mass.gov. A judge reviews the request and decides whether to waive or reduce the fee. You must show proof that you cannot afford to pay.
